Well, 100 Men Who Give a Damn kicked off this Fall in fine style. You might remember the event on July 22nd where 100 Men teamed up with another St. John’s charity, 100 Women Who Care. The result of that partnership was a combined donation from both of the groups’ members and today that damn big cheque was presented to the recipient charity, the Kids Help Phone. And how big was that cheque you might ask? The total combined donation was $31,200, the largest donation to date given by either group!

Big Cheque. Big Impact.
The cheque presentation ceremony happened at the JAC office on 673 Topsail Road and was attended by a few special guests. Steve Kent, the province’s current Minister of Health and the Conservative MHA for Mount Pearl North, was in attendance. $10,000 of the total donation came from the Department of Health and Community Services. Also in attendance was NTV news; they did a short segment on the cheque presentation ceremony and spoke with some of the attendees; you can watch their coverage here (skip ahead to the 24:00 minute mark). Representing the charities was John Atkins, Sean Stack, William Cahill, and Jeff Power from 100 Men, and Christy Haggerty from 100 Women.

A Big Help for the Help Phone
Ellen Foley came out to represent Kids Help Phone and accept the cheque. She spoke about how the donated money will be used to help fund a new initiative to reach out to young males. The organization has found that this demographic is more reluctant to reach out for help, so Kids Help Phone is making steps towards better reaching this group: “Over the years, we have observed that males are less likely to reach out for help. This new service will address specifically, male mental health issues, to make them feel more comfortable and understand that it’s okay to ask for help.”

100 Men Who Give a Damn would like to thank everyone who made this recent donation possible, especially all of the 100 Men members, the ladies of 100 Women Who Care, and the Department of Health and Community Services. We truly believe in the good that Kids Help Phone is doing and we hope that our donation will help them more effectively reach our province’s youth.
